This is the WordPress SEO question we get most from clients. The honest answer: both plugins can rank your site — the differences are in schema depth, performance overhead, WooCommerce support and how much you enjoy the interface. We compared them on a production-scale store and a content site.
Schema output — where Rank Math leads
Rank Math ships a broader structured-data set out of the box: Article, FAQ, HowTo, Product with reviews, LocalBusiness and custom schema builder blocks. Yoast covers the essentials well (WebSite, Organization, Article, Breadcrumbs) and adds more in paid tiers. If FAQ and HowTo schema are part of your content strategy — and for AEO/GEO visibility they should be — Rank Math includes them free, which our own FAQ pages rely on.
Performance overhead
| Measured on product page (cold cache) | Yoast | Rank Math |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin page weight added | ~110 KB | ~90 KB |
| Admin impact on large sites (10k+ posts) | Slower indexation UI | Faster, modular |
| Database autoload footprint | Moderate | Moderate-low |
Neither plugin will tank a fast site. Both will add weight to an already-slow one — see our Core Web Vitals guide for the bigger levers.
WooCommerce support
Yoast’s Woo support is paid; Rank Math includes Product schema and GTIN/Brand fields in the free tier. For a store on a budget, Rank Math is the pragmatic call. For an enterprise stack already paying for Yoast Premium, the incremental value of switching is rarely worth the migration risk.
Workflow & content analysis
Yoast’s readability analysis is the industry standard for a reason — it catches wall-of-text problems well. Rank Math’s content scoring is more aggressive and, honestly, noisier. Both tempt writers into keyword-box-ticking; neither score correlates reliably with rankings when used as a target.
Verdict
New sites and WooCommerce on a budget: Rank Math — free schema depth is real value. Established Yoast installs: stay — switching costs (settings, redirects, metadata mapping) exceed the gains. Either way: the plugin is 10% of SEO; content architecture and site speed are the other 90%.
What we don’t like
Rank Math’s free module list keeps growing, and with it the settings surface: redirects, 404 monitoring, local SEO, analytics — each with its own setup wizard and its own nag to enable more. On client sites we regularly disable half of what it ships because a shared-hosting site does not need the site running five monitoring features. Yoast goes the other way and upsells constantly — the premium training courses and locked schema blocks appear in the admin more than we would like. Yoast’s free schema output is also less flexible: editing it properly means filters in functions.php, which Rank Math exposes in UI. Pick the annoyance you can live with; both are honest about pricing, which is more than most SEO plugins manage.
Frequently asked
No — two SEO plugins double-load the same meta fields and fight over schema output. Migrate on staging: export/import settings, map old meta keys, diff the output, then switch. Can I run both plugins during migration?
