Theme vendors publish speed claims we could never reproduce, so we stopped trusting them. For this benchmark we installed eight popular themes on identical staging servers — same PHP 8.3, same MariaDB, same nginx config — imported the same 20-product demo content, and measured with WebPageTest mobile 4G, both uncached and after proper caching. All numbers below are ours, measured twice and averaged.
The test setup (so you can replicate it)
- Hardware: 4 vCPU / 8 GB VPS, nginx, PHP 8.3 opcache on, MariaDB 10.11.
- Content: identical demo page set — homepage, product archive, single product, blog post, contact page.
- Measurement: WebPageTest, 3 runs per state, median reported; uncached first, then cached with a standard config.
- No optimization plugins. We wanted theme overhead, not a plugin rescue.
The headline table
| Theme | Uncached LCP | Cached LCP | Page weight | DB queries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeneratePress | 1.31s | 0.62s | 218 KB | 58 |
| Kadence | 1.42s | 0.66s | 236 KB | 61 |
| Blocksy | 1.51s | 0.71s | 251 KB | 66 |
| Astra | 1.68s | 0.78s | 283 KB | 72 |
| Flatsome | 1.74s | 0.84s | 318 KB | 79 |
| OceanWP | 1.88s | 0.91s | 341 KB | 88 |
| Avada | 2.34s | 1.12s | 486 KB | 104 |
| Divi | 2.61s | 1.24s | 522 KB | 118 |
What the numbers actually mean
The gap between the fastest and slowest theme is 2.1 seconds uncached — larger than most hosting upgrades will ever give you. But note the second column: with caching, every theme lands under 1.3s. The lesson is not “Divi is unusable”; it is that theme weight sets your uncached floor, which is what search crawlers and first-time visitors experience.
Query counts matter too. Divi ran 118 database queries per page against GeneratePress’s 58. On shared hosting with cold object cache, that difference alone adds measurable time — it is why theme diagnostics always start there.
Per-theme notes
- GeneratePress — the benchmark’s reference point. Its lean-code approach holds up under measurement, not just marketing.
- Kadence — within 0.1s of GeneratePress with nicer defaults. If you want speed without feeling austere, this is the pick.
- Blocksy — surprisingly good given its feature depth. The customizer loads heavy but the front end stays lean.
- Astra — respectable, but its module system quietly accumulates weight as you enable features. Our module cleanup guide reclaims most of it.
- Flatsome/OceanWP — fine for shops; page weight is real but defensible for catalog UX.
- Avada/Divi — full-featured builders with a permanent speed tax. Budget for it, or pair with aggressive caching and a CDN.
How to benchmark your own shortlist
- Install candidates on one staging site, one at a time, same demo content.
- Measure uncached first — that is your true floor.
- Record database query count with a query monitor plugin.
- Only then add caching and re-measure.
If testing eight themes sounds like a week of work you do not have, our free site audit benchmarks what you have now and tells you whether a theme swap would even move your numbers. And Google’s Core Web Vitals thresholds are the context for why LCP gets all the attention.
In our identical-server benchmarks, GeneratePress posted the best numbers (1.31s uncached LCP, 218 KB page weight), with Kadence a close second at slightly nicer defaults. Not necessarily — freemium versions of GeneratePress, Kadence, and Astra test nearly identically to Pro. What matters is enabled modules, not the price tag. Reviews usually test clean installs. Your plugins, custom code, and hosting change the picture — measure with your real stack active before blaming the theme. Our tests measured 2.61s uncached LCP and 522 KB page weight. With strong caching and a CDN, cached visits land near 1.2s — usable, but you carry a permanent weight tax. More than ever on mobile 4G, where most B2C traffic arrives. Every 500 KB costs roughly 0.3–0.5s LCP on mid-range devices. What is the fastest WordPress theme in 2026?
